She’s been making these poached pears for years. She never measures anything, just throws the pears, wine and sugar in a pan and cooks them until they have turned into one of the most delectable and simple desserts you can make.

You can definitely dress them up when serving poached pears in wine with a little sprig of mint and some dots of red jelly (we used pomegranate.) Yes, that’s caramelized wine sauce in the photos–be still my heart!

Of course, we measured the wine and sugar when I took photos, but honestly, you don’t have to stress too much about measuring and weighing in this recipe.

How to Poach Pears

Poaching pears is easy: it’s basically cooking the pears in a liquid. You can easily cut the recipe in half and just make two pears, instead of four, or increase the amount if you have a larger pan. Don’t want to use white wine? Use red wine; any type of wine will work as long as it’s not too sweet or sparkling.

We love simple flavors and if your pears are good, the caramelized wine sauce is absolutely perfect on its own, however, you can also add your favorite spice, or vanilla, for example. Oh, and I must add, this is a real 3 ingredient recipe unlike others you’ll see where 3 ingredients (cake mix, jello pudding and cool whip) actually means 41 ingredients!

Cook for a few minutes until the pears are still firm, but cooked (poke with a skewer to test them.) Turn them over and cook for one more minute. I can’t give you an exact time as it will differ according to the type of pear you use and how ripe they are. However, it’s not difficult to check when they’re ready, just don’t overcook them.

Take the pan off the heat and remove the pears from the liquid in the pan with a large spoon (slotted is best) and set aside.
